My 4 and a half year old daughter instantly got the game and it really makes her think. She makes up her own games besides memory and loves the graphic pictures. My 18 month old likes the pictures too, and the durability of the wood makes these a long term toy. only downside, being wood, you can memorize the grain when the animals are hidden, but she hasn't figured that out yet!

When I choose a toy to give to my godchildren or niece or nephews, the first thing I look into is the age recommendation. I actually only consider two factors when buying toys for kids - age appropriateness and my budget.

Reading about baby injuries caused by what I consider to be pretty harmless toys made me rethink my selection criteria. It made me aware about the safety aspect of kids' toys. After a few hours of Internet surfing, I've learned that:

1. Toys must not have sharp surfaces or points.

2. Toys for kids under three years of age must not contain small parts or produce small parts when they break, like rattles with small balls in them.

3. Toys must not have pinching parts or wires that could poke through.

4. Stuffed toys or dolls should have no ribbons, strings, cords, or necklaces that can be wrapped around a child's neck.

5. Any toy that can fit through a toilet paper tube is a choking and ingestion hazard.

6. Projectile toys like darts and slingshots are for older children.

7. I should also consider if there are younger siblings that can be interested to the toy because that toy can be a potential hazard for the younger ones.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission bans toys for sale in the U.S. that do not pass federal safety standards on small parts, low levels of lead in paint, flammability limits, and hazardous chemicals.

In August 2008, new toy safety standards have become a law in the U.S. The law requires, among others, lead levels in painted toys to be reduced to 100 parts per million and phthalate content to be below 0.1 percent. It also requires mandatory testing and safety certifications as well as tracking information for parents to easily find out if the toy they bought has been recalled. For some parents, the new law might not be the solution to some problems on child safety but it is a good start.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has a lot of information for parents like safety tips not only on toys but also on baby cribs and play yards, bicycles, pools, playgrounds and playpens. A visit at their Web site, www.cpsc.gov, is enlightening. There's an updated list of recalled toys and other products in the site that will prove to be helpful for parents.

Parents can even receive direct e-mail notification of product recalls through the agency's Web site. This is one free e-mail subscription parents should have. They can also subscribe to electronically receive new recalls and safety information at www.recalls.gov.

A blog by independent and nonprofit organization, Consumers Union, is another great site for parents to visit. The site is regularly updated with safety news and tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission as well as news relating to child safety from publishers like The New York Times, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, and Time magazine.

There is so much to learn about toys and their safety standards. Hopefully, we all can be made aware of these standards to prevent tragedies.

My 5 month old loves this toy. The mirror and the softness of the fabric. I say this is her second favorite because her first favorite is Sassy Earth Brights Wooden Dove. If the Dove isn't around, this one keeps her happy. The rattle inside also keeps her attention when she shakes it around.

The Melissa and Doug Princess Castle is one of my favorite toys I bought for my family. I'm sure you've all heard of toxic toys from overseas, junky toys made in sweatshops, and terrible things like that. I even found out this year that 85% or more of all toys in the USA are made overseas!

Melissa and Doug is a national company, and is based in the United States (so far as my research tells me). From owning various toys they've put out, I can tell you that everything they make is top quality.

Let's take, for instance, the Melissa and Doug Folding Princess Castle. Is it made of cardboard? No. It's actually made from real wood. Who would've thunk in this day and age that there are companies that care about making quality toys, not just imported junk. We have various wooden puzzles and other toys from this company, and we have no complaints on any of them.

If you look at the details and care that went into the making of the princess castle, you'll see that it will make a fun toy for any little girl. I think the combination of wanting to be a princess and pretend play, imagining yourself as a princess, plus the fascination girls have with their dolls and their dollhouses, makes this toy appealing to kids on many levels.

We bought ours about 4 months ago, and our kids haven't lost interest in it yet. I think that says a lot about this toy, don't you? Since we bought it, the price has come down substantially, but I'm not upset and I still consider it money well spent.

I bought this for my 6 month old and he loves it the different textures and easy to grip circles make it a favorite also he loves chewing on all the attachments. I love this new line of sassy's, the toys are beautiful and my son seems to really enjoy them.
Customer Review: pretty nice toy, but not quite what i expected
From the photo I thought this teether toy was made of several kinds of wood, but once we received it we saw that what appears to be 3 different types of wood is actually more of a thick laquer or paint applied the pieces. It's still a nice toy, but i check it regularly to make sure the paint isn't chipping off the toy. Our son really does enjoy it.

There is nothing worse than a rainy day in the middle of the school holidays, when children are cooped up inside, you have nothing planned, and the inevitable cries of Im bored are not far away! Keep this list of rainy day activities ready for just such a day. Older children may enjoy choosing from the list themselves.

1. Sort through the toy cupboard:

Its surprising how much fun this can be! Get everyone together and aim to clear one shelf or drawer. You will probably find that old treasures are rediscovered, odd pieces can be thrown away, and some things will be ready to be passed down or sold. If you are not sure whether to get rid of some of the toys, try packing them away in a box and hiding them in a dark corner of the cupboard for a few months. When they come out again they will either cause a sensation, or not - which will make it easy to decide on their fate!

2. Record the sounds around you:

Get out the tape recorder and make a project out of recording everyday sounds. Try water running in the bath, someone ringing the bell and opening the door, or flushing the toilet! It certainly makes you think about things a little differently than usual. Suggest that some friends or neighbours do the same thing and then get together to see if you can identify each others sounds!

3. Make a story tape:

Grab that tape recorder and a blank cassette, find a story you enjoy, and make your own story tape! Each child can read for a while, or can take on the part of a particular character. Make the appropriate noises too! You will probably have to practice a few times to get the hang of it, and be prepared for lots and lots of giggles! Tip: a homemade story tape makes a great present for a child who has to go to hospital or is bedridden for a time.

4. Have a jigsaw afternoon:

Get out all your jigsaws and invite some friends around with theirs too! Clear plenty of space and have a marathon jigsaw session. Some libraries have jigsaws you can borrow too, and you can often find jigsaws for sale very cheaply at charity shops (thrift stores) and car boot sales (garage sales). Tip: if you buy your jigsaws second-hand and the box has seen better days, cut out the picture and store it in a re-sealable bag with all the pieces.

5. Have a mammoth junk modelling session with friends:

Invite a few families around and ask them to bring their craft-cupboard junk with them boxes, containers, and other bits and pieces. You provide glue, sticky-tape, scissors, and encouragement. You could make houses, or creatures, or boats, or modern art or you could all combine together to make one giant model!

6. Make a card house:

If you dont know any good card games or havent anyone to play with, try building a card house! Start by balancing two cards against each other so that they stand up in an inverted V-shape. Take it from there!

7. Make an indoor obstacle course:

Check with an adult that this is OK first! Use easily movable furniture (kitchen chairs, coffee tables) to mark out a course. Create a tunnel to crawl through with a blanket draped over low tables, or space cushions around the room to use as stepping-stones. You will have lots more ideas!

8. Practice balancing:

Balancing is fun! Try walking the length of the room with a book on your head. When you can do that, try balancing two or three then add a cuddly toy to the very top!

9. Create an indoor den:

A few blankets and tablecloths can create the most wonderful indoor den. Drape blankets between sofas and chairs, over stepladders and clothes-dryers, or tie the ends to cupboard knobs and door handles. Once the den is created find some special snacks, coloring pages and pencils, a CD player and music, a torch or two, and camp out for a while!

10. Play with string:

Older children can create some wonderful inventions with a ball of string and their imagination! A toilet roll and a sloping length of string make a great message chute or rocket. Get some action toys involved too: try making them a lift (elevator) out of a box or a basket and hoist them up! Adults should supervise constantly if there are younger kids around.
